Ariane 5

High-power European broadband satellite set for launch from French Guiana

September 6, 2022 Stephen Clark

An Ariane 5 rocket is set to blast off Wednesday from French Guiana — a day later than planned due to a poor weather forecast Tuesday — with a Eutelsat-owned satellite designed to beam broadband internet signals across Europe from a position in geostationary orbit.

Falcon 9

Falcon 9 launches Starlink satellites, Boeing rideshare payload

September 4, 2022 Stephen Clark

SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket Sunday night with 51 more Starlink internet satellites and a rideshare payload that will use a Spaceflight-built orbital transfer vehicle to climb into a higher orbit to test broadband communications technology for Boeing. Liftoff from Cape Canaveral occurred at 10:09 p.m. EDT Sunday (0209 GMT Monday).

Artemis

Hydrogen leak delays moonshot by at least several weeks

September 3, 2022 William Harwood

NASA’s star-crossed Space Launch System moon rocket was grounded for the second time in five days Saturday, this time by a large hydrogen leak in a fuel line quick-disconnect fitting that will delay the $4.1 billion booster’s maiden flight by several weeks, likely into October.

Artemis

Live coverage: NASA to conduct Artemis 1 repair work at the launch pad

September 3, 2022 Stephen Clark

NASA says it will carry out repairs and tests on the Artemis 1 rocket at the launch pad rather than immediately rolling back to the hangar. The agency needs the Space Force to extend the certification of flight termination batteries if it wants to make another launch attempt in September. Otherwise the rocket will have to return to the assembly building and face a lengthy delay.

Artemis

Lunar demo mission to provide ‘stress test’ for NASA’s Artemis moon program

September 2, 2022 Stephen Clark

The first unpiloted mission for NASA’s Artemis lunar program aims to prove out the most powerful rocket to ever launch from U.S. soil, and test the function of a human-rated spacecraft traveling more than 40,000 miles beyond the far side of the moon before blazing back through Earth’s atmosphere at nearly 25,000 mph.

Artemis

Italian microsatellite promises orbital photo bonanza after Artemis 1 launch

September 2, 2022 Clive Simpson

Italian engineers are expecting a series of spectacular photos from a tiny satellite that will be released to fly in sync with the interim cryogenic propulsion stage that propels the Orion capsule and European Service Module to the moon from Earth orbit.

Artemis

Giant solar sail will propel tiny spacecraft to intercept and study asteroid

September 2, 2022 Clive Simpson

Catching a ride on Artemis 1 is a miniaturized CubeSat called NEA Scout that will use a thin, aluminum-coated solar sail about the size of a tennis court to propel it towards the smallest asteroid ever to be studied by a spacecraft.

Mission Reports

Russian cosmonauts work on robotic arm outside space station

September 2, 2022 Stephen Clark

Two Russian cosmonauts completed a 7-hour, 47-minute spacewalk outside the International Space Station Friday to continue testing and readying the European Robotic Arm for regular operations, finishing tasks originally planned for a spacewalk last month that was cut short by a spacesuit battery problem.

Artemis

NASA proceeding with Saturday launch attempt for Artemis 1 moon mission

September 1, 2022 Stephen Clark

Confident that out-of-bounds engine temperature readings during Monday’s Artemis 1 countdown came from a bad sensor, NASA officials gave the green light Thursday to move forward with another try Saturday afternoon to launch the agency’s giant new moon rocket on an unpiloted test flight from the Kennedy Space Center.

Mission Reports

Webb telescope eyes Phantom Galaxy with mid-infrared camera

September 1, 2022 Stephen Clark

Fresh images from the James Webb Space Telescope show the Phantom Galaxy in vibrant infrared light, part of a series of observations with the new $10 billion observatory to help astronomers study the formation of stars.
