The mission will test a host of changes made to both the launch vehicle and the launch infrastructure as SpaceX prepares to support the Artemis 3 mission in 2027.

This was the fifth and final flight of this iteration of the rocket, which has been marred by a number of setbacks. The first Starship Version 3 is expected to debut in 2026.

The next launch of SpaceX’s super heavy lift rocket would come nearly three months after the last test flight. Liftoff from Starbase, Texas, is planned during a one-hour window that opens at 6:30 p.m. CDT (7:30 p.m. EDT / 2330 UTC).

NASA concerned SpaceX’s Starship schedule could delay moon landing

A senior NASA official raised concerns Wednesday that “difficulties” with SpaceX’s development of the huge new Starship rocket could delay the Artemis program’s first moon landing with astronauts from late 2025, a mission that will use a derivative of the Starship vehicle to ferry a two-person crew to and from the lunar surface.

After years of anticipation, SpaceX launched the first test flight of its full-scale Starship rocket Thursday from South Texas, but the mission ended four minutes later as the vehicle veered out of control and self-destructed over the Gulf of Mexico following multiple engine failures.

SpaceX launched the first full-scale Starship and Super Heavy rocket from South Texas at 8:33 a.m. CDT (9:33 a.m. EDT; 1333 UTC Thursday). The nearly 40-story-tall rocket, the largest ever built, lifted off from the Starbase launch complex and flew downrange before veering out of control and exploding about four minutes into the flight.
