A commercial Northrop Grumman Cygnus supply ship berthed at the International Space Station fired its main engine for 50 seconds Tuesday in a test of the spacecraft’s ability to reboost, and possibly eventually deorbit, the massive research outpost.

Astronauts Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg suited up and floated outside the International Space Station Friday for a spacewalk to install and unroll an upgraded solar array wing delivered to the complex earlier this week by a SpaceX Cargo Dragon supply ship.

NASA has signed a $187 million contract with Northrop Grumman to complete the preliminary design of a pressurized crew habitat for the planned Gateway mini-space station near the moon, and agency officials have discussed new details about plans to launch first two Gateway modules on a single heavy-lift rocket.
