A last-of-its-kind piece of space hardware — the only remaining shuttle external fuel tank — is making its way along the city streets of Los Angeles today.
External Tank No. 94 is headed from Marina del Rey on the Pacific Coast, where it arrived by barge on Wednesday, to the California Science Center at Exposition Park.
The trip to the museum will cover 16 miles and could take upwards of 20 hours to complete. It began at midnight, leaving the marina trailing a New Orleans jazz band in honor of the city where the tank was built.
The tank will become the structural backbone of the vertical launch pad display of the retired orbiter Endeavour that California Science Center plans to open in 2019.
