Photos: Water tanks removed from space shuttle for new use

From deep inside the retired space shuttle Endeavour, technicians today extracted the crew module’s water retention tanks that now are destined for launch to the International Space Station.

The salvage operation was performed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles — Endeavour’s final resting place.

The tanks will be delivered to the station aboard U.S. Cygnus cargo craft or Japanese HTV freighters to store water on the outpost.
