The Chandra X-ray Observatory was launched into space aboard Columbia on July 23, 1999 at 12:31 a.m. The mission was led by Eileen Collins, the first woman commander of any space flight. The other crew members were pilot Jeff Ashby and mission specialists Steve Hawley, Cady Coleman and Michel Tognini.
