STS-87

Columbia launched with the United States Microgravity Payload 4 and the Spartan 201 solar science satellite at 2:46 p.m. on November 19, 1997. The Spartan spacecraft failed to operate properly after release from the robot arm. It was then bumped by the arm during a botched retrieval attempt. Spacewalking astronauts had to grab the satellite. The crew was led by commander Kevin Kregel, with pilot Steve Lindsey, mission specialists Winston Scott, Kalpana Chawla and Takao Doi and payload specialist Leonid Kadenyuk.
