![]() ![]() Space shuttle Discovery made its inaugural flight on August 30, 1984. Liftoff occurred at 8:42 a.m. from pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center. Commander Henry Hartsfield, pilot Mike Coats, mission specialists Judith Resnik, Richard Mullane and Steve Hawley and payload specialist Charles Walker deployed the SBS-D, Syncom 4-2 and Telstar communications satellites. A 102-foot tall solar array was also extended from the payload bay for a test. |
