Columbia lifted off on October 18, 1993, at 10:53 a.m. EDT on the second Spacelab Life Sciences medical research flight. The mission was led by commander John Blaha, with pilot Rick Searfoss, mission specialists Rhea Seddon, Bill McArthur, Dave Wolf and Shannon Lucid and payload specialist Martin Fettman.
