Enterprise leaves the Smithsonian

After being a museum exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Northern Virginia since 2003, the prototype orbiter Enterprise vacates the museum's shuttle display slot that Discovery will fill.

Enterprise was used for a series of approach and landing tests in the late 1970s and launch pad fit checks. She is headed for a new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the Hudson River in New York City. Discovery enters the Smithsonian's national collection as the most-flown reusable spacecraft in history with 39 flights to her credit.
