Third engine removed from Discovery BY SPACEFLIGHT NOW Posted: April 1, 2011 
The three-day process to remove the three space shuttle main engines from Discovery was completed on Friday, April 1 when the center powerplant was extracted from the orbiter. The photographs below show SSME Block 2-2044 in Discovery's engine No. 1 position. It flew on 13 shuttle flights beginning with Endeavour's STS-89 mission in 1998 to the Russian space station Mir. NASA plans to preserve these powerplants for potential use on next-generation vehicles. Discovery will be fitted with rebuilt engines used earlier in the space shuttle program for museum display.
