Atlantis launched at 8:13 a.m. on March 24, 1992, with the ATLAS 1 atmospheric research payload on a Mission to Planet Earth flight. The crew consisted of commander Charlie Bolden, pilot Brian Duffy, mission specialists Kathryn Sullivan, Dave Leestma and Mike Foale and payload specialists Byron Lichtenberg and Dirk Frimout.
