A Russian Proton rocket was towed from a fueling barn to the launch pad Thursday at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. An 11,900-pound spacecraft is strapped inside the Proton's nose cone, ready to begin a 15-year mission facilitating a broadband satellite communications network stretching from space to the corners of North America.

The Proton rocket is scheduled to lift off at 1729 GMT (12:29 p.m. EST) Sunday with the SkyTerra 1 payload for LightSquared. The Proton will deploy the spacecraft more than 9 hours into the flight.

These photos show the Proton's journey from the fueling building to the launch pad. All images were released by Khrunichev, the Proton rocket's Russian contractor.
