As the Winter Olympics ramp up in Sochi, satellites and astronauts have glimpsed at the Russian resort city and detected the unmistakable mark left by the games.

Cameras aboard the International Space Station, high-resolution commercial Earth viewing satellites, and NASA's environmental satellites have all looked at Sochi in recent weeks.

The images show the Black Sea port city illuminated from the glow of Olympic Park and the Olympic flame, which was lit Friday at the start of the Sochi Games after a torch relay that included a stop at the space station in November.

This photo taken Feb. 10 from the International Space Station with a 600mm lens shows the Sochi Olympic Park. Fisht Stadium where the Opening Ceremonies were held on Feb. 7 is easily recognizable as the oval blue structure in the Sochi coastal cluster. The Olympic flame is inside the white circular structure to the left of the stadium. See a larger version. Credit: NASA

This image captured Feb. 3 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Aqua satellite shows little snow cover around Olympic Park near the Black Sea Coast but plentiful snow at higher elevations hosting alpine ski events. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer on NASA's Terra satellite recorded this view of Sochi's Olympic Park on Jan. 4. In this image, red indicates vegetation, white is snow, buildings appear in gray, and the ocean is dark blue. See a larger version.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer on NASA's Terra satellite recorded this view of Rosa Khutar ski resort near Sochi, Russia, in the valley at center. This region is hosting alpine events at the Winter Olympics, and ski runs are visible on the shadowed slopes on the left-hand side of the valley. Height has been exaggerated 1.5 times to bring out topographic details. In this image, red indicates vegetation, white is snow, and buildings appear in gray. See a larger version.
