Molniya rocket lifts off

A Molniya-M rocket was launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia today carrying a classified military communications satellite.

Liftoff occurred at 1134 GMT (7:34 a.m. EDT), according to news reports.

The spacecraft was destined for a highly inclined, highly elliptical orbit around Earth where it would be used to relay spy satellite data.
