Launch weather forecast
Posted: May 12, 2003

 Forecast for Tuesday, May 13

Issued: Monday, May 12
Launch Weather Officer: Jim Sardonia, 45th Weather Squadron

Synoptic Discussion: "Conditions will remain favorable for (mobile launch platform) rollback this afternoon, winds will be light and there will be almost no chance of lightning within 5 nautical miles of SLC 41 today or tomorrow. All thunderstorm activity associated with the old frontal boundary to our north has ceased, and none is expected as the boundary moves through later tonight.

"Weather for tomorrow will be ideal for rollout and launch. Dry air behind the front will produce predominantly Clear skies and light northerly winds. Temperatures will only be slightly 'cooler' tomorrow with Highs in the mid 80's. The only slight concern for tomorrow is the chance of a few Cumulus clouds inland within 10 nautical miles of SLC 41 becoming enhanced by the sea breeze.

"In the event of a delay to Wed, 14 May, conditions worsen only slightly as an increase in temperatures and moisture is expected, increasing the chances of enhanced Cumulus Clouds on Wed afternoon."

Clouds: Few Cumulus at 3,000 feet with 1/8ths sky coverage and tops at 8,000 feet

Visibility: 7 miles or better

Launch Pad Winds: Northeasterly from 050 degrees at 8 gusting to 15 knots (as measured at 230 feet)

Temperature: 79 to 81 degrees F

Relative Humidity: 65 percent

Weather: None

Solar Activity: Low

Probability of Violating Weather Constraints: < 10 percent

Concerns: Slight chance of Enhanced Cumulus Clouds

 Forecast for Wednesday

Wednesday's Probability of Violating Constraints: 20 percent
Concerns: Chance of Enhanced Cumulus Clouds and Anvil Clouds within 10 nautical miles
